Wilson Communications Announces 2010 Scholarship Recipients! 

Wilson Communications is proud to announce the recipients of our 2010 scholarship program.  Mallory Rathburn and Whitney Steinike, Ellsworth High School; Kaitlin Ptacek and Megan Zelenka, Wilson High School; Melanie Brummer and Garrett Greif, Tipton Catholic High School; Aspen Ulrich and Elise Schulteis, Sylvan Grove High School; Alia Naegele and Amanda Steinle, Lucas-Luray High School; Payte Johnson and Rylee Miller, Ell-Saline High School.  In addition Leanna Streit, Tipton Catholic High School was selected to receive the FRED General Scholarship.  Congratulations to all our area winners and Good Luck with all of your future plans!

 

   
   

Wilson Communications is proud to offer scholarships to the youth of our communities! Every year two students from each of the communities we serve are awarded $500 scholarships. We also sponsor applicants to other scholarships offered by the Telecommunications Industry.  If you live in our service area and will be graduating High School this year, fill out the application below to apply for any of the scholarships you are interested in.

 

Wilson Communications Scholarship - Two $500 scholarships are awarded to each of the five high school graduating classes in our service area.

In cooperation with the Foundation for Rural Education and Development (FRED), the National Exchange Carrier Association (NECA), Nortel Networks, OPASTCO and the Rural Telephone Finance Cooperative (RTFC):

The Ethyl Grant Program - Created to enhance both the economic conditions and quality of life in rural communities served by OPASTCO members.  The program provides matching grant funds ranging from $500 - $2,500 to telephone companies that have developed projects aimed at bettering their schools & communities.  All projects require 100 percent matching donations by the community.

The FRED General Scholarship  - FRED recognizes outstanding students who have rural backgrounds, are interested in pursuing careers in the telecommunications industry or show an interest in returning to rural America.  Range from $1,000 - $2,500.  To apply for any FRED Scholarship students must live in or attend school in an OPASTCO member’s service area.

Features:

Everette Kneece Return to Rural America Scholarship - This scholarship awards $5,000 to the top applicant who is an outstanding student and shows the desire to return to live, work, and contribute to a rural community.

Telecommunications Internship Programs - Support for education of students already gaining useful experience in the telecommunications industry through internships or part-time employment at a telephone company.  Range from $500 - $1,000.

Leadership Through Learning Program -Twenty juniors from across the U.S. are invited to spend an all expense-paid, 7-day, educational week in Washington DC.  This program brings civic lessons to life by taking the students behind the scenes allowing them to witness their government in action.  Numerous activities include study visits to Washington landmarks, seminars with national leaders, social events with other students and learning about telecommunications’ importance in rural areas.

Rural Round-trip Ticket Scholarship - This scholarship is awarded to one outstanding student who shows desire to return to live, work, and contribute to a rural community.  It provides up to $5,000 per year for up to four years to cover the cost of tuition, fees and books.  Academic progress is monitored.

Rural Teacher of the Year Award - Recognition of one outstanding educator’s achievements with a grant of $5,000 to be awarded to the recipient’s school for technology upgrades and expansions.

Teacher Education Grants - These grants fund professional development opportunities for rural public school teachers (K-12) that add to their teaching skills and ultimately to the education of the students.  Range $500 - $2,000.

Technology Grants for Rural Schools - These grants were created to help rural schools meet the growing need for innovative technology in the classroom and target public schools that are working to increase the use of technology in the classroom by utilizing new forms of technology to enhance learning.  Range $1,000 - $10,000.

In cooperation with the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS), the National Telecommunications Cooperative Association (NTCA) and PRIMO:

College Scholarship Program - The Foundation promotes, educates and advocates to the public, rural telecommunications issues in order to sustain and enhance the rural way of life throughout America.  FRS awards twenty-five $2,000 scholarships to rural high school seniors.  Wilson Communications provides an additional $500 donation if a sponsored applicant is chosen.

PRIMO - This $500 scholarship is available to any student whose parent or legal guardian is a customer of a Kansas PRIMO member company.  Preference is give to students in Marketing, Public Relations, or Telecommunications related fields.
