Takes Effect Next Month!

The Federal Communications Commission adopted an order approving the designation of 988 as the 3-digit dialing code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. To facilitate implementation, area codes across the country where the 988 prefix is a working prefix and which now use 7-digit local dialing must transition to 10-digit local dialing. This includes the 785 area code in our service area.

Starting October 24, 2021, you'll need to dial the 785 area code plus the 7-digit phone number to make local calls. In addition to changing your dialing routine, you'll also have to reprogram 7-digit local numbers to 10-digit numbers if you use speed dial or any other system that automatically makes calls for you.

A message From Wilson Communications' Director of Technology, Brad Schiermeyer

Download Images to View Apple iOS and iPadOS users that have upgraded to at least version 14 might notice warnings on their iPhones and iPads that state that they are connected to a wireless network using "Weak security." This message comes from the iOS and iPadOS 14 updates that changed what Apple devices consider good wireless security. An Apple mobile device user can receive this message because they are connected to an open network that does not use a password. However, now you may also receive this message due to the security type configured on your home router. The latter is most likely if you may be "all of a sudden" receiving this warning.

With this update, Apple is taking the importance of using the security type WPA2 instead of WEP or the original WPA a little further and considers the encryption that those security modes are using when determining if a connection is weak or not. No security mode below WPA2 should be used. There are two encryption types used by WPA2, TKIP and AES, where TKIP is no longer considered strong security by Apple (and many other) devices.

To remove this warning, you must update your network to WPA2-AES or the newest version, WPA3, which uses AES natively. Each router is configured differently, but this setting needs to be updated for each SSID configured. For example, if you have a wireless network called HoggettFarm and another called HoggetFarm-Guest, both will need the security method updated. A WIFI5 (802.11ac), or WIFI6 enabled router must be used for these encryption types and security modes.

It is important to note that the devices connected to a network also affect the security of the network. As I stated above, to use AES encryption, you must have the ability for WIFI5 or higher. This means that if there is an older device that connects with 802.11n or older, you cannot connect using AES and will bring the network's security level back down.
